Today I had my first shower in 7 weeks. It felt fantastic!
It wasn't easy to step in the shower and felt almost impossible to get out because you need to lift and drop the legs in one step, something that in normal circumstances wouldn't be a problem at all.
Luckily Richard had the brilliant idea of using the wheelchair so that I could back out of the shower by sitting into the chair.

Ricardo has been here a week and has looked after me while Adrian was up in Leeds.
I wore him out! Poor [livejournal.com profile] bazanges! LOL

Today Sheila should have come for tea but unfortunately she wasn't well.
Adrian tried some new recipes: a plum and pine nut loaf, and white chocolate and limoncello tarts. There were both wonderful!

[livejournal.com profile] london1952 and [livejournal.com profile] bazanges together:

At the hospital on Thursday they adjusted my knee brace to bend at 60 degrees but due to the swelling I think I can only manage about 30 but it should be enough to be able to sit at the table for a while.
I'm going to try to work from home from tomorrow, probably alternating between sitting at the table and sitting in my armchair. I am not looking forward to the stress but well I have to start sooner or later!
london1967: (knocker)
Another week has gone past since my last post.
I have got used to being confined to my armchair/bed/wheelchair and to hopping about on the crutches (although I still occasionally lose my balance or kick one of the sticks).
The worst is always when you read or watch a movie and then for a few moments you forget about the leg, only to be reacquainted with reality when you think about getting up.

We continue to go to our usual local haunts for my daily breath of fresh air.

The parks

which sometimes present a conundrum:

(And here's another puzzling sight: the blackboard of a local pub which has been closed since the beginning of the year for violation of the spelling licencing laws. And then squatted in by the manager for a while.)

The local garden centre/cafe' for tea and cake:

It's nice to step out of the front door to admire our 'babies':

(cornflowers and opium poppies)

Yesterday afternoon we had some unexpected visitors: Michael and Christopher who had just got back from Sitges the night before.
Luckily, I had just finished my toilette at the kitchen's sink

which Adrian immortalised in photographic form - perhaps Not Entirely Safe For Work )My kingdom for a shower!

It's amazing and worrying to see how the muscle of the injured leg has shrunk in just 6 weeks. And also my gluteal muscles too.

The leg and knee in

this photo behind the cut )
look rather vile: the leg is compressed by the straps and swells where there is room. The rotating pad that compresses the knee doesn't do much for the swelling.

Poor Adrian ([livejournal.com profile] london1952) has to go up to Leeds tomorrow for a couple of nights, but luckily the lovely Ricardo ([livejournal.com profile] bazanges) is on his way to visit us and 'babysit' me!

Day 5 of 42

Jul. 4th, 2013 07:03 pm
london1967: (knocker)
It seems that the English Summeris finally here!

This afternoon I went to sit outside in the drive like an old crone: I needed some fresh air; changing viewpoint/position makes you feel less trapped.

Adrian ([livejournal.com profile] london1952)  had to go up to Leeds yesterday for a couple of nights for funeral arrangements but luckily the lovely Ricardo ([livejournal.com profile] bazanges) offered to stay for a few days after returning from the fatal (for me - and Adrian!) holiday in Sitges on Monday.
I'm so grateful as I would have really struggled on my own. And Adrian might have had to cancel.

My left foot and [livejournal.com profile] bazanges watering the pots

The "patient"

My leg is less sore but it's gets very painful if I touch the ground with it (sometimes it happens if I lose my balance with the crutches) or if it suddenly jerks (my twisted brain has decided that it'd be fun to relive the accident a few times when I'm about to fall asleep).
What worries me is that every time this happens, there's a chance that the tendon repair will tear; but I cannot do much about it.

I'm feeling a bit more like my old self - the tears have stopped now; although I'm sure that they'll come back at the funeral next week.

The lovely Ricardo (aka [livejournal.com profile] bazanges) spent the long week-end with us.
Yesterday Adrian ([livejournal.com profile] london1952) and I had tickets for the 'Life and Death in Pompeii and Herculaneum' exhibition at the British Museum and Ricardo came with us, although it wasn't possible to get another ticket (apparently it is one of the must-see this year).

The weather was lovely all week-end (something very unusual!) and yesterday morning the sky was very blue

Don't be fooled by this empty road! In and around the museum was rather busy...

The exhibition is in the former reading room, in the middle of the courtyard

We have been to Pompeii (I've been 3 times) and Herculaneum, and we only visited the Archaeological Museum of Naples (which loaned at least half of the objects on display) at the end of January so nothing was really that new to us but we both enjoyed the exhibition a lot.

While in the museum in Naples everything is displayed according to a traditional layout, here there's a plan: the floor plan of the exhibition is modelled on the layout of a Roman villa and the archaeological finds are placed in the appropriate rooms. This makes it much more interesting to see.

While in Naples we almost had the museum to ourselves (we visited out of season and in the late afternoon), at the British Museum it was quite a different story: I had to be quite patient (I don't like crowds) and put up with running children and the occasional B.O.!
Unlike Naples, no pictures were allowed - one really wanted to challenge that but what's the point when it's that busy?
I would have never expected to read words such as 'cocksucker' and 'shitter' at the BM! But well blame those Romans! LOL!

After the museum, we went to Soho and indulged ourselves!
We visited two ice-cream parlours: Amorino on Old Compton Street and Gelupo on Archer Street.
Greedy? Us? Never!! LOL!

It was just so lovely to see and feel the sun at the week-end! And we weren't the only ones thinking that...
This is Green Park seen for the upper deck of a 38 bus!

We're coming to the end of the 4-day long Easter week-end. Apart from Friday when we had some brilliant sunshine until the early afternoon, it's been grey. Today it's raining too - but we need some wet weather.

We've had company since Wednesday.
First it was Paola, Francesco and the little Adele

visiting from Italy until Saturday morning, and then from Saturday evening the one and only Ricardo (Richard/[livejournal.com profile] bazanges)

With the exception of a walk along the Thames with our Italian friends on Good Friday, we've been very lazy indeed!

Home alone

Adrian ([livejournal.com profile] london1952 ) and Richard ([livejournal.com profile] bazanges /aka Ricardo) left early this morning for Stansted airport and then Limoges.

Richard has a lovely farm/house which he has been repairing for a number of years. It's almost in the middle of nowhere!
Ricardo doesn't drive and Adrian does - and they both love gin: hence...

They got there safely.

I'm at home and am tired as I only had a 3-hour sleep last night.

We had a power cut at 1:15 am; I walked up slightly later and I could hear drilling. So I had to go out to check and saw two vans in the middle of the street. The engineers were working a few doors up from us.
I also rang the power cut emergency number and they confirmed that they were repairing a fault.

I went back to bed but couldn't fall asleep. The power came back at around 3 am but sleep didn't for another half an hour, until after I got up to reset the alarm clock. (we had another 2 going - battery operated - yes I can be that paranoid!)

Adrian got up at 5 am and I woke up as well, and got up to kiss them au revoir and wish them bon voyage!

Lynne and Miranda said that they would call for a cup of tea this afternoon to see us and the lovely Ricardo ([livejournal.com profile] bazanges ) who's visiting for a few days.

So I was rather surprised when I answered the door and saw them with a birthday balloon, a Patisserie Valerie cake, cards and presents!
Such a lovely surprise! (my birthday is next Thursday).
Thank you so much!

Sitges

It's Sunday evening and we have spent two lovely and relaxing days on the beach

and also had fun at home and in town

The beach was full of naked men (familiar faces and... other body parts from previous years!) and the atmosphere is quite relaxed. I guess I could get used to this kind of life!

This morning we left our 'green and pleasant land'

on a British Airways flight from London City.

The fligth was very pleasant; we were even served a hot breakfast

and two people who may remain nameless had a gin&tonic at 9:40 am, and not just any gin but 'export strength', 47.3% proof!

Ricardo ([livejournal.com profile] bazanges ) was bemused by the lady sitting behing him who couldn't stop talking about money and her 5 star accommodation but chose to travel economy

We got to Barcelona 15 minutes ahead of schedule

and we arrived in Sitges at 1:30 pm.

A lazy afternoon relaxing

and going to the supermercado

Roy will be arriving late tonight and tomorrow hopefully we'll spend the day on the beach (2 people may be recovering from a G&T hang-over as they are on their 4th now).

Party!

Our lovely friend Richard (aka Ricardo /  [livejournal.com profile] bazanges ) is visiting for a few days. We are having a very relaxed and laid-back week-end (it's 1 pm and Ricardo is still in his bathrobe eating homemade focaccia!)

Last night we caught the train to Chatham

to go to Michael's 50th  birthday party

Here are the birthday boy and Ricardo

It's been a strange day weather-wise.

Beautiful colours this morning

followed by a very short blizzard: wind and frozen rain.

This afternoon it was sunny and windy (with icy storms blowing over parts of the city) and we enjoyed quite a beautiful sunset

Ricardo ([livejournal.com profile] bazanges ) has - alas! - returned home. We really enjoyed his visit: he's such a laugh and a dearest friend.

This evening I met Adrian ([livejournal.com profile] london1952 ) at Fortnum & Mason's before heading to Compton's on Old Compton Street where we had arranged to meet Tony and Malcolm:

We went for a Thai meal followed by a hot chocolate in Patisserie Valerie. It was a lovely evening: they are such a charming couple!

When we got home, the street and gardens looked as if  they had been sprinkled with icing sugar.

The lovely Richard (or Ricardo to his friends and aficionados) got here tonight and we'll be all leaving for Sitges on Saturday morning.

Adrian cooked a lovely dinner and for dessert we had his chocolate marble cake with raspberries.

Maybe it was something that

Adrian the sorcerer had put in the cake, but all of a sudden people turned into monsters!

It's my fourth day since I got back from India and it almost feels as if I had never been away. Good or bad: you decide! LOL!

The trip tired me out and I haven't had a chance to get a proper rest because on Sunday we threw a Christmas party for friends and neighbours.

This morning I got up and felt rather under the weather, so I decided to take it easy and stayed at home (after all, Friday was a 20-hour day!)

Apart from the party, the other highlight of the last 4 days was David and Richard's visit at the week-end. They are two of our dearest friends; sadly we cannot see them as often as we'd like because of the distance (Cardiff and Gloucestershire).

Richard (aka Ricardo)

Camera-shy David!

Adrian ([livejournal.com profile] london1952 ) did - as always - a marvellous job of decorating our home for Christmas and the party. I think that it deserves a separate post.
london1967: (octopus)
While we were at Richard's farm at the week-end, the conversation turned to the subject of the royal family.
Highgrove House, Prince Charles' country house and estate (dedicated to organic farming), is nearby and Camilla is also from that part of the world and often seen in the area.

Let's just say that Camilla is not Richard's favourite person; but he adores Céline Dion.

Well apparently Camilla,  Céline (and Madonna) have a common ancestor!! (let's rephrase that: they have an ancestor in common).

So tired!

Oct. 5th, 2007 09:11 am
london1967: (asleep)

Today I'm working only half-day as I'm flying to Turin after lunch to visit my parents.
I am taking a case full of Christmas presents (hopefully this time the case will arrive there with me) but no camera (maybe I will take some pictures at Christmas).

I know it sounds silly - as I'll be back on Sunday night - but I'm going to miss Adrian (

[personal profile] london1952)!
Every time I go away he seems to be under the weather, and this time he has rather a bad cold.
He didn't sleep well last night, and neither did I. I was sick before going to bed and had the runs! I only had to get up twice in the night, but I couldn't sleep. I kept tossing and turning, feeling chilly and hot at the same time, just like when you have a high temperature.
So this morning I'm totally exhausted and I so wish i didn't have to fly this afterrnoon!!

Have a good week-end you all!
And huge hugs to David and Richard: Richard has been in hospital for the last couple of weeks with severe respiratory problems. He's doing better now but we are all still very worried.

Back home

Sep. 16th, 2007 05:27 pm

We travelled back from Barcelona yesterday afternoon; the week in Sitges was simply fantastic!

It was lovely to share our holiday and the apartment with David and Richard: they are such wonderful and fun people.

The weather was great (we had 2 or 3 cloudy mornings but the sun burnt its way through the clouds) and so we (Adrian, Richard and I - David's not too keen on spending the whole day on the beach) went to the clothing-optional Balmins beach every day from 10 am till about 6/6:30 pm; then we would go back to the apartment for a drink (or a few) followed by dinner out, and the bar(s).
On Friday it was very overcast in the morning and we left the beach at midday, just as it started raining, to go to Tarragona for the afternoon (the sun came out eventually).

My good self, Richard, David and Adrian ([livejournal.com profile] london1952) after a few drinks

The apartment we rented for the week was a great find: very roomy and well furbished; the only drawback was the noise as it was in the centre, a few doors up from the Bears bar: despite the quadruple glazing, you could still hear the noise from the street but it was bearable.

We didn't do any clubbing nor did really have any late nights (we were normally in bed by 1 am or often even 12!!) but we had fun! We all (apart from me) got drunk at some stage and behaved "disgracefully": two of us (to remain unnamed) got more than just nibbles from the human tray at the bar Casablanca!

Some naked - and camp - pictures behind the cut: NOT WORK SAFE! )

We also bumped into the handsome[livejournal.com profile] gorkabear (who, by the way, looks much younger in the flesh than on his journal).

Our stay coincided with part of the Sitges Bear week but we didn't go to any of the events (apart from the foam party at the sauna where I went on my own). No need really as the town and the beach were very much taken over by the bears anyway!

and, finally, a look at some, more alive, visitors

The long week-end is almost over: it went so quickly.
Richard

(caught by the camera after a refreshing shower)
got here just after 4 pm yesterday.
He and his partner David are such fun, and are two of our dearest friends.

We had a cup of tea and cake, a long chat, followed by a gin & tonic

and then it was time to cook dinner.
We made:
- shrimp cakes
- chicken, prosciutto and leek pie
- chocolate walnut brownies with raspberries and cream
all washed down with a few glasses of wine.

Today we had a late breakfast (11:30 am!). The weather was lovely and so we decided to visit West Norwood Cemetery, one of the Magnificent 7, large Victorian cemeteries established north and south of the river in the 1830s/1840s.
It was lovely: so peaceful and green. And very atmospheric.
Pictures to follow: now it's time to cook some dinner!
london1967: (Default)
Richard's on the train from the airport, and as we know he loves chocolate, Adrian ([personal profile] london1952 ) baked an iced marble cake

and I made some chocolate and walnut brownies

london1967: (Default)
The weather forecast was right and today the sun's shining, and it's warm too.
It's going to be a lazy, long week-end (Monday is a Bank Holiday).
The lovely Richard (or as we often call him Ricardo) is stopping for a couple of nights here on his way home from his farm in France; so earlier today we discussed food and menu for the next few days.

Adrian ([personal profile] london1952) in "decisions, decisions, decisions..."! LOL!

And now that the shopping's done, it's time for a sit in the garden, to read the paper.
Have a  great week-end, you all!
