This is a statue on one of the most striking and unusual tombs at West Norwood

with curious tile decorations

(perhaps I should turn this into a bear T-shirt?)

and, finally, a look at some, more alive, visitors

More statues from the cemetery

Here are a few pictures taken yesterday at the West Norwood Cemetery, in south-east London, one of the 7 large Victorian cemeteries in Greater London.

The cemetery was opened in 1837, and a number of famous Victorians are buried there including Mrs. Beeton, Sir Henry Doulton (yes, of the Royal Doulton china, so dear to Hyacinth Bucket), Sir Henry Tate (sugar merchant and famous for the Tate Gallery), Baron von Reuter (news agency),  etc.
See here and here for more info.
There's also a large Greek/Cypriot Orthodox section.

The place is beautiful and peaceful (if you don't get any West Indians playing loud music on their car stereos for their dead relatives); but some tombs/memorial are rather spooky...
