Dear Italy,

Many thanks for another wonderful holiday.

You never fail to entertain and suprise us, even though we have known each other for a very long time.

Your rugged good looks

(Manarola, Cinque Terre, Liguria)

are a match for your artistic temperament and passion.

(San Michele in Foro, Lucca, Tuscany)

You didn't have to put 'make up' on

(Snow in Lunigiana, Tuscany)

(Campo dei Miracoli, Pisa, Tuscany)

to make us fall in love with you all over again.

And thank you also for all the superb food and wine. You always like to spoil us!

We'll be back to visit you very soon.

Lots of love,
Franco (and Adrian)
xoxo

Countdown

It's great to have a Monday off, although it's depressing to think that it's the last public holiday before Christmas.

Today my head is already in Spain, despite still having have 3 days at the office with a project to complete.

This is what I'm planning to read on the beach:

I'll probably be so absorbed in reading that maybe I won't even notice all the naked men on the beach! Well, perhaps not...

Escapism

I don't think I suffer from SAD but I'm finding this winter to be interminable.
It's not the cold (or the snow) but the greyness and lack of blue sky and sunshine.

That, compounded with being rather bored and de-motivated at work, means that my head is often lost in the contemplation and planning of holidays.

At the same time, I'm aware that I should be trying to save some money and can hear my parents' voices in my head urging me to do so (and quite often hear, in real life, my mother sarcastically asking whether I have won the lottery).

On the other hand, I really love going away with [livejournal.com profile] london1952  and life's too short (I'm thinking of our three friends who passed away in the last year).

So apart from the upcoming trip to Malta,

I have now booked flights Barcelona (for a sojourn in Sitges  in September, together with [livejournal.com profile] bazanges )
and flights to Ljubljana  in April for a long week-end.

Also booked a week off work in June but still debating what to do.
The original plan was a trip to Puglia (Apulia)  the "heel" of Italy (neither of us has ever been there) but I've also toyed with the idea of Iceland   and NYC The Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor but all these options are rather expensive.

We may then decide to stay in the UK and go to Cornwall , north Wales or the Lake District .

In the last couple of weeks I've been itching to book a holiday for February/March (as [livejournal.com profile] bobalone knows, since we discussed it at length over dinner).
Despite the winter being rather mild in London, what we miss here is the light and the sun.
Winter with its very short days can be a depressing affair, and I find it helps to have something to look forward to.

After taking the 4 short breaks planned for the rest of this year, I'll still be left with 2 weeks of annual leave. According to company rules, I'm allowed to carry them forward and take them before the end of March with my line manager's approval.

My line manager has been on holiday while the British Airways sale was on.
There were some tempting offers for flights to the US, and I quite fancied seeing Arizona in winter or sunning myself in Palm Springs or treating ourselves to Bette Midler's show in Vegas on my birthday.

I could have booked it as I'm sure that I would have had my time off approved but on the other hand, the idea of having to go through U.S. immigration again curbed my enthusiasms, especially as I'm still smarting when I think of last year. *sigh*

Out of curiosity, I looked at the Homeland Security website and found a press release from 2004 that made me laugh (bitterly).

"I expect professionalism and courtesy to be the hallmark of every CBP Officer. It is my goal that all visitors and traveling U.S. citizens see the CBP uniform as a symbol of our Nation's great strength, ideals, and liberty," said Commissioner Bonner.

"We pledge to cordially greet and welcome you to the United States. We pledge to treat you with courtesy, dignity, and respect. "

Nothing but words. I am still angry at the discrimination and at the rudeness, and have never liked the assumption that every alien is a threat unless proven otherwise.

That memory certainly makes the Mediterranean even more appealing! (plus the BA sale is now over anyway).

It's all doom and gloom here in London: Adrian ([livejournal.com profile] london1952) will be out of work at the end of the month and British Telecom has announced even more redundancies (totalling 10,000).

In such a climate, it'd probably be sensible to save money and weather the storm... but no, I need something to cheer us up and what's better than planning a holiday?

The shortlist of places that we have come up with for an early sun-kissed spring holiday is: Malta, Gran Canaria, Madeira, Key West. All islands.

Adrian's always been very keen on visiting islands.
This reminds of the time I stayed at a B&B by Lough Erne (Northern Ireland) and the owner asked for advice on the Italian lakes, because she really fancied a trip to some different lakes.
Part of me feels slightly claustrophobic at the idea of being on an island, but over the years I've certainly come round to the idea.

Last week we toyed with the idea of Key West because it'd be more relaxing (we've been once before = no sightseeing) and there were some very reasonable American Airlines flights. Now they are gone.

Maybe it's a sign that we should stay in Europe. Madeira at the moment is the favourite: Adrian said that now he's old enough to go there! LOL!

We are packed, checked-in and ready for our trip to Toronto and Boston/New England in less than 12 hours.

Today I had to explain to a co-worker (of Indian origin but who went to school in England) what New England is! I seriously thought that he was joking when he said that he had no idea of where it was; it appears that he didn't even know that part of the U.S. were a British colony. He just thought that the Americans were already there.
I was and still am simply flabbergasted!

I'm taking my laptop with me but don't think I'll do much LJ-ing when on holiday, even though I'd quite like to post a few pictures when they are stil hot off the camera. And of course read about your lives!

According to the weather man on the BBC, we have only had half the normal hours of sunshine this August. And I believe that: just in the last 3 days I have been looking out at a very grey and gloomy London from my office window.

Sometimes, I find it difficult to stay positive when the weather is so dull.
I could easily moan about a number of things (such as: the cyclist that ran a red light and swore at us last night as we were on the pedestrian crossing; or the uninspiring and mind-numbingly boring job, or… well I could carry on, you know!).

But let’s concentrate on the positive (and just as I’m writing this, a ray of sunshine has managed to pierce the clouds!)

Exactly in 4 weeks’ time we’ll be on holiday and on our way to Toronto! (and then to Masach… no Masacch, no… ok: MA, NH, VT and RI).

I’m starting to get excited about the upcoming holiday! (But – allow me to push Pollyanna in a corner for a bit – and moan about the evil US$ rallying against our poor GBP. It always seems to happen before we go on holiday).

Apart from visiting new places, I’m also looking forward to meeting a number of you!

Finally, 2 weeks after getting home from our holiday, I'm posting about the last day.

The pictures are not too good as the dust accumulated on the sensor meant that they had more spots than your average teenager. Oh well!

We liked Cannes: we had a nice little walk on the promenade and then walked up to the old town

Then we headed to Grasse where we visited one of the perfume factories.

The last stop, before heading back to Cagnes-sur-Mer was the beautiful, bastioned village of Saint-Paul-de-Vence where they certainly took heed of the "man does live by bread alone" maxim and every shop doesn't sell food but art.

The following morning a short drive to Nice airport, and a few hours later we were back home, poorer but with lots of lovely memories!

Our day started with a whistlestop tour of Aix-en-Provence
before heading south for the Côte d'Azur.

On the way we stopped at Giraud, a very picturesque village dominated by the ruins of the castle

Light lunch in Giraud and then down to Saint-Tropez.
The town is quite beautiful but the people are very pretentious. And some of the ginormous yachts so nouveaux riches and in your face.

We had a nice walk around the port (spotted a couple of paparazzi with huge telephoto lenses trying to photograph goodness knows who on the boats; when they heard the clicking of my camera, they turned round all worried! That made me laugh!) and a hot chocolate at the Cafe de Paris.
The waiter was very rude, the chocolates not very good and rather expensive; I got annoyed by the rudeness and paid the  €11.60 in change, some rather small. The waiter contemptously left the coppers on the table... and we left.
Not one of my finest moments (bad Karma and all that) but push me and I'll give you Latin - but understated - temper!

Then we drove to Cagnes-sur-Mer where we stayed at the delightful Villa Estelle in the old medieval village. We drove through the village and the streets were just wide enough for our small car.

After unpacking, we enjoyed a romantic walk up to the castle (and let me tell you: that hill gives San Francisco a run for its money!) and dinner.

After months of looking forward to it (we booked the trip in January!), finally it's time to leave for Sitges tomorrow.
(For those of you - if any - who have never heard of the place, Sitges is a delightful and rather picturesque sea resort in Catalonia, about 30 minutes from Barcelona; during the summer months it's taken over by gay people from all over Europe and beyond.)

It'll be our 3rd time there, and this time we are going with our dearest friends David and Richard. We are renting an apartment in town, a stone's throw from the Bears bar and El Horno, and not planning to do much apart from spending time naked on the beach (Platja des Balmins) reading, looking at the "fauna" and floating/frolicking in the sea.
There's also a bear event  from Tuesday onwards, and I (we?) may go to the foam party at the sauna as I've never been to one, and I am debating whether the "Excursion to play PAINTBALL + Swimming pool + Lunch" could be fun (but it may be sold out).
Perhaps one day we'll go to Montserrat but will make sure it's not Tuesday as it is the Catalan National Holiday and with the Virgin of Montserrat being the saint patron and a symbol of the country, it'll be be busy up there.

I may post a few pictures of clematis taken in the garden later this evening if I have time, but I don't think I'll be writing much in the next 7 days.
Take care, you all!

It looks like my flight is going to take off today, though it's not clear with what delay...

Hope Adrian will manage to fly to Leeds tomorrow as domestic flights are still very disrupted (he has now booked a seat on a National Express coach as a backup option).

This is probably my last post for a few days so...
Merry Christmas/Happy Hanukkah (delete as appropriate) to you all!
