Today I had the pleasure of meeting [livejournal.com profile] danthered !

Before catching the train home and walking in on a house full of people (the residents' association committee), I spent almost a couple of hours at the Stag in Victoria with the engaging and "simpatico" [livejournal.com profile] pbehr, who is in London for a few days.

Of course, I had to take a couple of pictures

(and had to prove that I was there too!)

Tonight we had the great pleasure of meeting Lance and Jeff ([livejournal.com profile] square_baker),  first over dinner at Balan's

and then for coffee at Princi's (followed by a drink at the King's Arms)

(Jeff - [livejournal.com profile] square_baker - is actually taller than me but he was trying to fit in)

They are lovely people and the evening just flew by! Hopefully our paths will cross again soon.

LJ dinner

This evening we enjoyed the company of [livejournal.com profile] dasypygus  and [livejournal.com profile] pink_halen  who came all the way to Penge to join us for dinner!

It was lovely to meet you both! Hope you'll enjoy the rest of your stay in London.

Tonight I had the great pleasure of meeting up  at London Paddington with my newest LJ friend: the handsome [livejournal.com profile] sunsmogseahorse.

He was in London for one night only before flying to Estonia tomorrow.

It was lovely to meet you Ted, and looking forward to a repeat, hopefully with a bit more time. Safe travels!

We have just got back home from Edinburgh. The city was lovely as always, the weather so-so, but at least it didn't rain (my third visit there and I still haven't seen the sun!)

We joined Mike and Alex, David, Kevin and Michael as part of a English contingent to Bearscots Fest 2010

Adrian and I did very little clubbing but much more than we are used to these days!

It was also an occasion to wear kilts.

It's nice to go around town wearing one without people giving you funny looks (some tourists apart) or worse trying to lift it to see what you are wearing underneath.

Apropos of that, Mike has tagged a picture on Facebook (Adrian's on there) taken by the official event photographer... yesterday I was sitting on a sofa in a club next to a drag queen and he lifted my kilt for everyone in the room to see!
Luckily my 'bits' have been blurred!
I already got an e-mail from a friend and ex-colleague of mine... I wonder if other people at work will see it too... noooooooooooooo!!!

On Saturday afternoon we had the sweet surprise of bumping into the lovely [livejournal.com profile] arktos62 !  It is always a great pleasure to spend time with Craig.

(The picture wasn't taken by a valkyrie... the camera was on top of a set of beer taps)

LJ friends

49 out of my 122 LJ friends haven't posted for 2 weeks or more.

So, I ask you: do you have any new (to me) LJ friends that you think I would enjoy reading?

Tomaz ([livejournal.com profile] paterson_si) and Igor picked us up at around 11 am and drove us to a beautiful corner of their country.

The first stop was the idyllic Lake Bohinj

Imagine snow-capped mountains, crystal clear water... hang on, just have a look at the photos! (which don't do it justice)

Click here for more pictures )

Second stop was the equally lovely but more built-up Lake Bled with its castle perched on a cliff top and the picturesque church on the island (the only Slovenian island, Tomaz said).

More here... including the famous cream cake! )

Back in Ljubljana, after a little rest, Adrian and I walked up to the castle just in time for sunset

Thank you Tomaz and Igor for this wonderful trip! It was wonderful to meet you both.
london1967: (Default)

Leaving aside photos of Ljubljana for now, here are a few pictures of LJ's sweetheart [livejournal.com profile] paterson_si  and his lovely partner Igor, meant especially for a certain person in Bulgaria (I hope I'm doing a good job Darina!)

We met Tomaz and Igor first over cakes

then we had a walk around part of the centre to see the only monument to Napoleon (in a public place) outside France

Igor and Tomaz suggested going to a village to taste traditional Slovenian cuisine. We drove for quite a while the road getting steeper and narrower until we got to the the middle of nowhere (well, sort of!).

We had a nice walk towards the church

("The hills are alive.....")

just as the sun was setting

Dinner was... interesting!
We were the only patrons in the restaurant... we had sausage (very tasty) and sauerkraut, accompanied by a buckwheat, water and pork scratching mixture

We quite enjoyed dinner (and didn't have the anticipated windy night! - you'll be pleased to hear)

Then it was back to Igor and Tomaz's swish and lovely new apartment for a nightcap

(Tomaz playing with his big tool - I have camera envy now! lol)

The boys very kindly offered to pick us this morning for a trip to Lake Bled: cannot wait!

Dear Former Guest from a far-away land,

I am really sorry I have to write you this letter.

I'm afraid that you and other readers will think me mean spirited and petty but I just have to take the risk because, since your visit, things haven't quite been the same around here, and every time you threaten to come back to see us again I feel enraged and sad.
And I cannot cope with this rage that has been on a low simmer for months.

Why didn't I/we tell you how we feel in private? Because we hate confrontations. Call us passive-aggressive if you wish, but we are unable to do it face to face.
Besides, with having a number of friends in common, I'd rather tell the story first instead than having them hear it from you.

You said that you were going to be "the perfect guest" but, you know, it is not OK when you visit a couple to chase one of them around the house and grab his private parts at every opportunity.
Yes I should have been firm and said no the first time it happened, but I was really hoping that once you got what you wanted you would have left me in peace for the rest of your long visit.

It is not OK to offer to pay my partner in kind for our hospitality. There was no need to pay: after all you were a guest.
Said that, a gesture like offering to take us out to dinner one night - and nowhere fancy, after all this is Penge - would have gone a long way to say thank you  for the 8 dinners and breakfasts you had with us.
And we would have probably said no, anyway.

You went to a neighbours' BBQ where drinks and food were expected empty-handed. You chose to spend your money on fancy teas to take home instead.
I do appreciate that money may be a concern to you but it is to us as well: my husband was and is after all unemployed.

Nothing ever seemed to be quite good enough: whether it was the small washing machine (which you even used to do some of your laundry the night before you went back, to save time and money I guess) or the feather pillows and duvet which you blamed for your cold.
And when I offered you some Lemsip tablets for your cold, you took them all instead of taking the ones you needed for the night and buying some the following day (we found the empty box in the bin in the morning).

I bought you Jelly Babies and herbal tea and sweeteners but please don't drop any more hints about your dwindling tea supplies: I'd rather burn the fancy tea store down than mail you some.

I even had to ask you to buy a replacement for the mobile charger you lost because you just felt it was OK to leave me with a mobile that I couldn't use any longer.

When you left, we both felt we had been used (and abused) as a cheap free accommodation and couldn't quite believe what it had just happened.

I'm really sorry and I apologise to you and everyone else who has read this post, but I needed to get it off my chest and lay it to rest.
I am already feeling guilty because I know that you've been down lately.

I am not saying that you are a bad person.
It is probably nobody's fault - maybe it's cultural differences or conflicting personalities.

I really hope that this won't put other people off from coming to visit us: I believe that we are decent and friendly people with no financial (or otherwise) expectations, apart from good manners and consideration.

Adrian and I had the great pleasure of spending an evening with [livejournal.com profile] arktos62 .

We met Craig in the Kings' Arms

and then we walked down to Old Compton Street.
Our friend Malcolm had organised surprise birthday drinks for his other half Tony in Compton's; as we had said that we wouldn't have made it because of my leg, we surprised them both!
We spent a few minutes with them before the whole group went to dinner nearby and Craig and us crossed the street to dine in Balan's.

[livejournal.com profile] arktos62 about to enjoy his steak and ale pie

It was a lovely evening: Craig is chatty, witty and charming, just as I expected from reading his journal.

Have a great time in Paris Craig: we look forward to seeing you again in the hopefully not too distant future!
london1967: (Torino)
My week-end in Torino went very well.
I was surprised that it was still so warm (although a 10 degrees C drop is forecast for later in the week) and annoyed to get bitten 4 times by unseasonable mosquitoes!

The highlight of this visit to my hometown was seeing [livejournal.com profile] paulintoronto and [livejournal.com profile] bobalone who happened to be in Torino at the same time as I.
Unfortunately, I wasn't able to spend with them as much time as I'd have liked to due to family commitments.

Bob wasn't feeling very well on Saturday so it was only Paul and I who went for quite a long walk.
It's always nice to show your own city to friends as you see it through different eyes. Plus it was a trip down memory lane for me.

From their hotel in Corso Vittorio Emanuele II, we walked up Via Lagrange to the Egyptian Museum, Palazzo Carignano, Piazza Carlo Alberto and then down Via Po to Piazza Vittorio Veneto and the river.
We then strolled (perhaps marched, I should say) along the river to the Parco del Valentino which Paul really enjoyed. The Borgo Medioevale was built for the 1884 Italian General Expo: it is composed of replicas of famous medieval buildings from the region (apart form the castle, it's only facades!)  I guess it was a Victorian Disneyland and now an antiquity itself.

When Paul and I got back to the hotel, Bob joined us for a cup of tea at a cafe' in Piazza Carlo Felice.

Just enough time to drink my tea and I had to rush off to catch the bus (a coach, in fact) back to my parents'.
I caught a glimpse of them from the bus, wondering when Adrian and I will see them again (as Bob pointed out, we have now met in 3 different countries!).
Here's to our next meeting!
london1967: (Default)
We had the pleasure of spending the evening with the lovely [livejournal.com profile] bobalone, in London for a few days, on his way to Geno(v)a to be reunited with [livejournal.com profile] paulintoronto.

It seems that Paul, Bob and I will be in Turin at the same time in October, so I hope to meet them there for a cioccolata calda.

This evening we headed to a small and quaint pub a stone's throw from St. James' Palace.

We don't normally go "pubbing" but there was a very good reason, meeting two fellow LJ-ers during their very short stay in London.

[livejournal.com profile] jawnbc and [livejournal.com profile] querrelle (here with a friend - Mike? By the way, Mike is very tall)

John and Max are both very charming, and the friends they arranged to meet there were great company too.
Pity that they already leaving London tomorrow morning... hopefully there'll be some other chance to meet again in the future.

Another picture of the handsome couple:

Thank you for inviting us to the Red Lion: it was lovely to meet you both!

When I got in, I rushed out to take some pictures of the irises in the garden.

With the strong winds and the heavy rain forecast for the next few days, I am not sure I'll get another chance!

I found a flower-loving bear ([livejournal.com profile] erstexman ) in the garden. Safe journey home Evan! (hope it's not a bumpy ride tomorrow).

We are back in dear, old London!
We got home at around 9:30 pm last night after catching a morning flight from Boston and being collected at the airport by Lynne, our lovely friend and neighbour.

It felt unreal to be back after having been away for two and half weeks. The 3 separate segments of our trip (Toronto, driving tour in New England, Boston) made it feel longer.
But now it's almost back to normal and tomorrow even more so with going back to work.

The last night in Boston was spent again with the gorgeous [livejournal.com profile] madknits who took us first to the Alley, then to dinner (thank you Ken!) and finally for ice-cream.
Unfortunately, [livejournal.com profile] bear_left was unable to join us.

[livejournal.com profile] madknits waiting for us outside Boston Public Library

Another couple of pictures here )

And on Thursday evening we met up again with[info]quemadmodum.
We went to the Cheesecake Factory at the Prudential Centre.

london1967: (paddington)

Do you ever sneer at Italian tourists in London who flock to Italian restaurants instead of trying some of the culinary delights of the capital? Well I do.
But I swear it was all an accident/coincidence that we ended up first in an Italian pasticceria/bar and then in a pizzeria!

If we need a scapegoat, let's blame the handsome

[info]madknits !

We met by the statue of traitor patriot Paul Revere in the North End, and then enjoyed a lovely chat and Italian pastries in a nearby cafe'

([info]london1952 and[info]madknits look so serious but they were afraid of my big... camera)

We then decided to go for a pizza; the street signs pointed to all directions but a pizzeria

Luckily, a very helpful local pointed us to Pizzeria Regina which was a blast; great pizza

and fantastic waitress: she was a real character

Afterwards, Ken walked us to Park Street station playing tour guide too. We were very impressed by his knowledge of Bostonian history - he's not just a pretty face, but of course I knew that already from his LJ.

* Some of these pictures may look a bit weird as they were taken with Adrian camera and I forgot that they don't have exactly the same ratio as mine when I resized them. I was too lazy to do it again, plus I kind of like the comic effect.
