It's all doom and gloom here in London: Adrian ([livejournal.com profile] london1952) will be out of work at the end of the month and British Telecom has announced even more redundancies (totalling 10,000).

In such a climate, it'd probably be sensible to save money and weather the storm... but no, I need something to cheer us up and what's better than planning a holiday?

The shortlist of places that we have come up with for an early sun-kissed spring holiday is: Malta, Gran Canaria, Madeira, Key West. All islands.

Adrian's always been very keen on visiting islands.
This reminds of the time I stayed at a B&B by Lough Erne (Northern Ireland) and the owner asked for advice on the Italian lakes, because she really fancied a trip to some different lakes.
Part of me feels slightly claustrophobic at the idea of being on an island, but over the years I've certainly come round to the idea.

Last week we toyed with the idea of Key West because it'd be more relaxing (we've been once before = no sightseeing) and there were some very reasonable American Airlines flights. Now they are gone.

Maybe it's a sign that we should stay in Europe. Madeira at the moment is the favourite: Adrian said that now he's old enough to go there! LOL!

Although Zurich is not an island, you still owe me a kiss. And the call Switzerland an island. (A high priced one ... which I probably shouldn't mention.)

You have a point there: a promise is a promise! LOL!

Is Madeira for older people? I didn't know that.

Manhattan's an island...

Well it has that sort of reputation here in the UK: a slightly more sedate holiday destination (it isn't Ibiza! LOL!)

Good point about Manhattan! But it wouldn't be that warm in March!

Gran Canaria, if you get past the Playa del Inglés, is affordable and beautiful. The food is awesome! You can also hop to Lanzarote for stunning beaches for a couple of days, hopping between islands is cheap

Good, you know that I'm biased

One minor annoying note. When I was in Playa del Inglés we were overlooked by a few bar owners because we were spaniards. It's mostly for English and Germans. However, when there was a spaniard at the bar, the story reversed, so we managed to make a couple of friends and have a very enjoyable time

So sorry to hear the bad news, but you're reacting in a positive, healthy way. I look forward to hearing about your destination and seeing what will surely be some more delicious photography.

I've always wanted to go to Malta: have you been there before? What about Mallorca--warm in the Spring, not too busy, sightseeing if you want? I love the suggestion of Bali--but, you know, that scene was shot on Kuaii, so, really, it's the Hawaiian Islands that the film introduces. (I'm looking foward to seeing Adrian: maybe we can pour over travel brochures...?)

Hey Bob!

I've taken a shine to Madeira for some reason (it looks so green) and already ordered on Amazon 2 guidebooks!

Hawaii would be wonderful but it'll have to be another time!

Forgot to say that I've never been to Malta.
It's definitely on the list.

I think that the other holidays of the year will probably be Slovenia/Croatia in June and Sitges in Sep... but maybe I shouldn't tempt fate by planning so far in advance!
