All our hard (but enjoyable) work paid off and we had a fantastic Saturday afternoon.
An exhausting afternoon with setting up, then the dress rehearsal, followed by the performance and tidying up.

We had about 120 people in the church hall and they all seemed to enjoy themselves. There was a lovely buzz and all the actors (and ourselves) got a great round of applause.

I must say that it was fantastic to see a product of my imagination come alive, although I feel I didn't really manage to watch the show properly as I was too busy with following the script to see when I had to play the music tracks (it was a murder mystery with a show within - the audience loved the magic tricks and singing along to WWII favourites).

I only took some photos before the dress rehearsal and after the show, but Miranda took plenty and I'm really looking forward to seeing them.

Fiona (Adrian's sister) came down from 'up north' to play clairvoyant Miss Topaz Orb on her birthday

Fiona wasn't the only person travelling a considerable distance. Our lovely friend David ([livejournal.com profile] bazanges ' partner) shone as retired Inspector John Knowall.

But I guess that the real star is our community: it is wonderful to be able to stage such events with neighbours and for neighbours!

Our dearest friend David is staying with us this week-end. This evening we are all going to a tango-themed birthday party in Chelsea thrown by one of our neighbours for her 40th birthday!

But last night we had a mini party at home with Miranda, Lynne and Wimpy to watch BBC's "Your country needs you!" the programme that selects the act that will represent the UK at the Eurovision Song Contest in Oslo at the end of May.

As David had celebrated his birthday earlier in the week, we thought we should celebrate it too

He got a (shop-bought - oh the shame! LOL!) fruit tart and got us singing him Happy Birthday (I can confirm that none of us has been selected for Oslo!)

We were all rather underwhelmed by the six contestants - not that we listened to them with much attention as we were often too busy chatting.

And as a party is not a party without being silly, we all got to try a white Afro wig on

Yesterday it was the day of the Murder Mystery that we organised as a Residents Association social event.

Adrian, who was the organiser, was a bit stressed until the moment when we were allowed in the church hall to set up at 2:30 pm.
I was slightly worried that people wouldn't have enjoyed "Lady Bountiful's Drawing Room Drama" as I wrote it (although all the neighbours that played parts were quite taken with it).

At 3:00 pm we had our dress rehearsal:

Before the play, video introductions of all the characters were shown: Miranda and Lynne did a great job of editing the videos.

Any concern that not many people would have turned up were misfounded as we quickly had to add more chairs for the audience.

Our dearest friend David travelled all the way from Cardiff to play Inspector Knowall, and he was wonderful:

(here he's grilling Lucille Grosvenor)

In the interval mulled wine and mince pies were served and the audience were asked to solve the murder by analysing the 3 statements given by each of the 6 suspects (2 were true and 1 was false for each of them). Clue sheets were provided to help with the logic puzzle.

David later read the explanation (helped by a Powerpoint presentation).

Well everybody but one teenage girl (who - I think - used her instict) fell in the trap!
The clues led to two possible murderers: Pablo Bizarro - a Spanish artist - who had a motive for killing the journalist (he was trying to link him to a model, a boy who had drowned in the river) and Lady Bountiful - who didn't a motive.
The twist was that Lady Bountiful had meant to kill her niece Lucille but the journalist got the wrong glass.

None of the cast (apart from the inspector) knew the solution and Sim, who played Her Ladyship, was taken aback by the solution and rather shocked to have to read her confession, handed to her in a gold envelope!

We were very pleased with the afternoon as everybody seemed to have a great time and tried to solve the murder... I was also rather flattered at being complimented on the clever plot (Lucille - who appeared from the confession to be a little monster - wasn't quite as pleased when was booed! )

(regular readers may recognise this trio here)

It's my fourth day since I got back from India and it almost feels as if I had never been away. Good or bad: you decide! LOL!

The trip tired me out and I haven't had a chance to get a proper rest because on Sunday we threw a Christmas party for friends and neighbours.

This morning I got up and felt rather under the weather, so I decided to take it easy and stayed at home (after all, Friday was a 20-hour day!)

Apart from the party, the other highlight of the last 4 days was David and Richard's visit at the week-end. They are two of our dearest friends; sadly we cannot see them as often as we'd like because of the distance (Cardiff and Gloucestershire).

Richard (aka Ricardo)

Camera-shy David!

Adrian ([livejournal.com profile] london1952 ) did - as always - a marvellous job of decorating our home for Christmas and the party. I think that it deserves a separate post.

The predicted cold snap arrived on Friday night, and this morning we woke up to some snow.
It only lasted a few hours because it started pouring with rain.

Yesterday David came to visit us and instead of the promised cuppa he got full afternoon tea. It was also the first time we lit the fire this autumn.

As you know, I do love afternoon tea. I think it's a very civilised way of entertaining (it must be the Miss Marple in me).

Today we went to the Dolphin, a 'gastropub' in Sydenham for Sunday lunch.
We had a £40 voucher (second prize for my Hallowe'en costume); Lynne joined us.
The food was very nice with arguably the best onion rings I've ever had.
After that, we all went to the 'pound shop' in Bromley which for a £1 shop was actually rather nice!

No more boring pictures of dead leaves today, but of a handsome fellow LJ-er!

Yesterday we drove along the Mohawk Trail in western Massachusetts and met David at his lovely week-end home in Shelburne.

He had baked gorgeous cheese scones and applie pie with a crumble topping. Yum!

It was lovely to meet him at last, and we should see him again in Boston or Cambridge later in the week.

And to continue with pictures of people, here's a shot of me in the hot tub.

There were another couple of nice pictures (including one of what Adrian called my Joan of Arc look, but they contain some frontal nudity).

So tired!

Today I'm working only half-day as I'm flying to Turin after lunch to visit my parents.
I am taking a case full of Christmas presents (hopefully this time the case will arrive there with me) but no camera (maybe I will take some pictures at Christmas).

I know it sounds silly - as I'll be back on Sunday night - but I'm going to miss Adrian (

[personal profile] london1952)!
Every time I go away he seems to be under the weather, and this time he has rather a bad cold.
He didn't sleep well last night, and neither did I. I was sick before going to bed and had the runs! I only had to get up twice in the night, but I couldn't sleep. I kept tossing and turning, feeling chilly and hot at the same time, just like when you have a high temperature.
So this morning I'm totally exhausted and I so wish i didn't have to fly this afterrnoon!!

Have a good week-end you all!
And huge hugs to David and Richard: Richard has been in hospital for the last couple of weeks with severe respiratory problems. He's doing better now but we are all still very worried.

We travelled back from Barcelona yesterday afternoon; the week in Sitges was simply fantastic!

It was lovely to share our holiday and the apartment with David and Richard: they are such wonderful and fun people.

The weather was great (we had 2 or 3 cloudy mornings but the sun burnt its way through the clouds) and so we (Adrian, Richard and I - David's not too keen on spending the whole day on the beach) went to the clothing-optional Balmins beach every day from 10 am till about 6/6:30 pm; then we would go back to the apartment for a drink (or a few) followed by dinner out, and the bar(s).
On Friday it was very overcast in the morning and we left the beach at midday, just as it started raining, to go to Tarragona for the afternoon (the sun came out eventually).

My good self, Richard, David and Adrian ([livejournal.com profile] london1952) after a few drinks

The apartment we rented for the week was a great find: very roomy and well furbished; the only drawback was the noise as it was in the centre, a few doors up from the Bears bar: despite the quadruple glazing, you could still hear the noise from the street but it was bearable.

We didn't do any clubbing nor did really have any late nights (we were normally in bed by 1 am or often even 12!!) but we had fun! We all (apart from me) got drunk at some stage and behaved "disgracefully": two of us (to remain unnamed) got more than just nibbles from the human tray at the bar Casablanca!

Some naked - and camp - pictures behind the cut: NOT WORK SAFE! )

We also bumped into the handsome[livejournal.com profile] gorkabear (who, by the way, looks much younger in the flesh than on his journal).

Our stay coincided with part of the Sitges Bear week but we didn't go to any of the events (apart from the foam party at the sauna where I went on my own). No need really as the town and the beach were very much taken over by the bears anyway!
