The Diamond Jubilee Street Party was a wet affair: it stayed dry during the preparations, but with impeccable timing it started to rain 5 minutes into the event. And it rained, and rained, and rained. At least it finished on time: no hanging around till the early hours of the morning this time.

Luckily there were a few gazebos and brollies, and people didn't really mind getting wet. After all, nothing can be more British than the rain. Not the even the Queen!

I didn't dress up in a 1950's outfit but wore my wedding civil partnership clothes: I was pleased that I could still squeeze in the trousers (the shirt was a bit tight, but around the chest) after 5 years.
The rose was a very fragrant Gertrude Jekyll from our garden.
The hat was a new addition. I don't wear hats as they don't suit my unusual face, but I like this one which I had bought in Boston in 2008. It was its first outing.

Did I enjoy myself? Well I don't know.
I wasn't in a chatty mood yesterday (I never really am) but of course I made conversation to be polite as I was going around taking pictures for the website.
Is there a touch of sadness in those eyes? Or perhaps a bit of depression? I blame the weather.

So here we are on the last day of the Diamond Jubilee week-end.
It's also the day of our local street party. It is dry so far but the weather forecast is far from encouraging this afternoon.

It may also be Adrian ([livejournal.com profile] london1952)'s last event as the residents' association's social even co-ordinator as he resigned a few days ago. I think he's burnt out and a bit fed up with the apathy: not many people are bothered enough to help or even reply to flyers and e-mails, but everyone expects smashing events and are always ready to moan. But that's human nature, I guess!

Putting aside all this negativity, I hope that the street party will be fun!

There's a "Grand Trifle Competition" and since it doesn't seem there will be many entries, I made a trifle to boost the numbers.

It started as a traditional trifle but along the way got a Piedmontese twist with zabaglione (instead of custard) and Chantilly cream on top. I've decided to call it "Double-trouble trifle" due to the large quantity of alcohol used not only to soak the sponge base, but also to make the zabaglione.

How will it fare against Adrian's "Anglo-Italian trifle"? (which is my favourite to win). Will we come home with a prize or in disgrace, with no alternative to moving away from the area? Only time will tell!

I also made some "patriotic" almond macaroons...

It all started well with two eyes (reminiscent of the Trip Advisor logo) staring out of the Italian meringue

The bake produced mix results but there were enough good ones to make these

The colours are not quite right but well, what can one do?

As you can imagine, there are Union Flags everywhere around London.

Covent Garden did a very good job at decorating the old market, as the flags are only hanging consistently.

Until I moved to the UK, I always thought that the Union Jack was symmetrical both horizontally and vertically, but of course it isn't because the St. Patrick's cross is not centred.
Therefore there's a right way and a wrong way to fly it. The right way is with the cross of St. Andrew taking 'precedence' over the St.Patrick cross, when you look at the top left hand corner of the flag.

I guess that this doesn't apply to the flag hanging down because it depends on whether you look at line left to right or right to left.

-----------

I am wondering what I should make for the Street Party.
There hasn't been so far much interest in the 'Grand Trifle Competition' so I may make one in addition to Adrian's Anglo-Italian trifle (which I'm sure it's going to win!)

I was thinking of my lethal Zuppa Inglese with the addition of some fruit.

And perhaps some macaroons? I could make the 2 halves red and blue with a white-ish buttercream filling.

I also toyed with the idea of focaccia squares turned into caprese with the addition of tomato and mozzarella.
Adrian said I could add blue food colouring to the focaccia but would anyone eat blue focaccia?!?
