La Granja de San Ildefonso
Sep. 25th, 2012 10:41 pmLa Granja de San Ildefonso (about 10 km from Segovia) was commissioned by King Felipe V to imitate the palace and gardens of his grandfather's Versailles.
We didn't visit the palace (on which Filippo Juvarra - an architect that built a number of baroque buildings in Turin - left his stamp) but only part of its magnificent and huge gardens.

We didn't visit the palace (on which Filippo Juvarra - an architect that built a number of baroque buildings in Turin - left his stamp) but only part of its magnificent and huge gardens.
There are formal gardens, fountains, cascades and even a maze.
The fountains are mainly dry (they are switched on only at certain times and on certain days - according to the guidebook they should have been on when we visited but were not) but they are still very imposing even so.
One word that we repeatedly used when strolling around the grounds was 'fantastic!'
