We got back from Leeds late on Wednesday night.
The funeral went as well as these things can do. The service in the beautiful Grade II listed chapel was short and moving.
[livejournal.com profile] london1952's mother wanted something very simple and had chosen some music, a hymn ("Blessed Assurance") and a poem picked with Adrian and his sister Fiona in mind

Turn again to life
If I should die and leave you here a while,
Be not like others sore, undone, who keep
Long vigils by the silent dust and weep.
For my sake turn again to life and smile,
Nerving thy heart and trembling hand to do
Something to comfort other hearts than thine.
Complete these dear unfinished tasks of mine
And I, perchance, may therein comfort you.
(Mary Lee Hall)

The address from the Methodist minister was very fitting. He knew Rosemarie and heard more about her life from Adrian and Fiona.

Afterwards, we (the family) went back to Adrian's mum's flat and then met again later with friends and neighbours at a local cafe' for afternoon tea.

This is my favourite photo of the day: Adrian and Fiona back at the flat after the tea, reading some of the condolences cards

I managed to cope with my leg through the long day. I had to sit in the chapel on my own with my leg stretched out at the front, hoping that the pallbearers were not going to trip.
As Fiona pointed out, Rosemarie would have appreciated the irony of the exit music she picked: "One more step along the road I go"! lol

We got to the church for the funeral an hour early, and so we went to the pub almost opposite.
It was sunny and warm, and we sat outdoors for something to eat (superb ploughman's lunch).

We were not the only ones to kill some time there before the funeral... well we all needed a drink.
I/we didn't know Mike well at all, but I found the funeral service very moving. The tributes and the music, and especially the thought of a life so prematurely ended really got to me and I got a little emotional.
After the ceremony we walked down to Highgate cemetery, which we had only visited a few months ago. The cemetery is beautiful and in some parts very overgrown. The grave was in what almost amounted to a clearing in the woods: after the short ceremony, we filed past the grave to throw our handful of soil.
At the reception at Lauderdale House, in Waterlow Park we talked to Wendy and to a few other people Adrian knew.

The journey back into town was a nightmare, due to the underground strike. We got stuck on a crowded, hot, "bendy" bus; it took 25 minutes to negotiate one block in Bloomsbury and I felt I was going to pass out. The tie came off, and soon as the door were opened at the next bus stop, I got out for some fresh air.
By the time I got home (poor Adrian had to go to work) it was almost 8 pm and was exhausted, and emotionally drained.

Today I am wearing a suit and tie at work, and have the afternoon off. Many colleagues asked me if I had a job interview.
We're going to Mike's funeral at Highgate. Mike passed away after a long battle with cancer; he and Wendy (who's been friends with Adrian for many years) got married in hospital a couple of months ago and had permissions from the doctors to go on their honeymoon. He was only 39.
Last time we saw him was at our civil partnership ceremony in April.

May you rest in peace Mike.

A 72-hour strike on the Underground started last night at 6 pm.
9 lines out of 12 are closed; service on one of the other 3 is partially suspended.
This morning at Victoria there were crowds waiting for the buses (which, surprisingly, were less frequent than normal) and lots of policemen (to keep an eye on the crowd: long gone are the days of orderly queues and good manners - nowadays it's shouting arguments and the occasional punch-up); I waited for 15 minutes and then walked.
I felt like a tourist again walking past Buckingham Palace, up Green Park and then through Mayfair and Soho to the office. Sadly the shoes were not very comfortable.
