It was a Bank Holiday today, the last before Christmas and we had visitors.
First Paul, and later Michael and Christopher - they did overlap for a while and it was all very social.

Adrian baked a smashing cake: "White chocolate and raspberry melting cake", a recipe by John Whaite, last year's Great British Bake Off winner.

It was superb. The sponge was unusual: made up with melted butter and white chocolate, and with whole raspberries in the mix.
Adrian put the ganache not just in the middle but also on the top. I think he improved the original recipe!

I managed to make something as well. My first bit of baking/cooking in 9 weeks!
Orange Natas (Portuguese-style custard tarts) from the same book.

They were very well received, and I'm glad I baked them, although I found it quite exhausting with my limited mobility.
(And this evening I made tomato and basil crostini).

I like this picture of Adrian with the evening sun

And now I have to get in the mood for work (from home) tomorrow. Tomorrow morning I'm also going to see my GP to get a referral letter (hopefully) for some private physiotherapy through the medical insurance I have from work. Nothing wrong with the NHS (they have been excellent and I am very grateful) but it's really to speed things up.

It was great to have a long week-end and to have 3 days of mainly sunny weather (it could have been warmer and less windy but let's not be picky! LOL!)

On Saturday we went on a local 'Heritage Walk' organised as part of the annual Penge Festival; we didn't see anything new but it was still fairly interesting. The walk started at and ended at the Alexandra Nurseries; we had tea and cake and used the 10% discount for the participants to buy a few more plants.
Also I learned that a lady was interested in one of Pablo's photos with a different mount. The mounting was done last night.

As we were then in the mood for shopping we went up the High Street to Homebase where we purchased a few bedding plants (lobelias, snapdragons, petunias) and 3 more pots.
We were not in there long but when we came out and walked down the High Street, there were a number of people standing on the opposite pavement, a police car and an ambulance. And there was a body on the pavement.
In the couple of minutes it took to walk down, another 3 or 4 police cars and another ambulance arrived, and a helicopter was trying to find a spot to land.

According the local News Shopper paper, a woman killed herself by jumping from her flat. How sad.

We spent most of Sunday (from about 11:30 am to 8:30 pm) in the garden and despite being in the sun for less than a couple of hours, I got sunburnt on my bald head and neck.
It was exhausting work: I removed the bulbs from all the pots, and planted dahlias and lilies, and a number of seedlings and bedding plants. I think I did 22 pots, large and small.

Here are a couple of very cheerful poppies from the garden:

On Monday morning I collected my prescription glasses and then spent a couple of hours in the afternoon in an establishment of a dubious nature in Vauxhall while poor Adrian was doing more gardening (it was his turn to get sunburnt! lol)

And yesterday the weather turned grey and rainy. I'm really grateful for the sunshine at the week-end.

Today we've enjoyed one of our 8 public holidays. And for a change the weather was good, at least here in London.

What did we do? Cultural activities? Walk in the countryside? Nah.
We stayed at home: got up late, and sat in the garden reading this afternoon.

It really felt like summer today. And nothing says summer more than a sunflower.

Bank Holiday Monday and, as it is tradition, the weather's not that great. Chilly and light rain.

I believe that it's all down to the power of the collective psyches of millions of Britons: we all hope for sunshine and warm weather but deep, deep down we know it IS going to be miserable. And this is enough to break a spell of sunny and warm weather.

Today [livejournal.com profile] erstexman is spending the day with his friend Bernard in town and we're having a lazy day. I enjoyed reading the paper in the gazebo, sipping a hot chocolate.
Luckily there was no sign of the fox that yesterday decided to take a shortcut that involved a stroll on the gazebo roof!

Here are some pictures taken on Saturday around Crystal Palace Park.
