gay marriage
It's really more a matter of principle than anything else as Civil Partneships give the same rights/duties.
But the fact that it is a different type of 'contract' makes one feel a class B citizen. Plus I want to say that I am married (well will be married) without using the inverted commas.

I would have never imagined a Conservative Prime Minister pushing this through parliament, although his party was divided.

400-175!

I don't think the US will have anything like that kind of majority if/when a similar bill comes up. Mind you, they couldn't even pass an equal rights for women amendment to the constitution. As much as I enjoy living here, it still feels oddly backwater.

I know, it's quite a remarkable 'score'!

Maybe the difference is down to religion being much more important than here?

I think that plays a very large role.

So will do you have to get married all over again, or is it just a matter of re-registration or something?

According the proposals, one should be able to convert the civil partnership into a marriage with or without a ceremony, but the ceremony wouldn't be a wedding but something akin to a renewal of vows.

When it becomes law, the civil partnership can be converted into marriage, so no ceremony is required. Although a 'renewal of vows' is permitted.

We'd probably go for a very quiet celebration; we had quite a day when we got hitched the first time!

Thank you!
Now it has to go to the Lords (in May, I think) and then back to the Commons.
Fingers crossed!
