Champagne, canapés and cultivation
Apr. 29th, 2008 12:19 pmLast night I met
london1952 at Fortnum and Mason’s, the department store on Piccadilly famous especially for its tea, hampers and food hall. The store underwent extensive renovations in the last couple of years to coincide with its 300th anniversary.

Adrian had bought tickets for a talk on its history preceded by champagne and canapés.
It was fascinating, undoubtedly because there is so much to tell about how the store changed over three centuries, the services and merchandise it offered and its upper crust clientele, but also because the lady giving the talk was very engaging and with a great sense of humour. (The champagne that flowed rather copiously certainly helped too!)
We thoroughly enjoyed the evening, and we were very pleased that it didn’t turn out to be a stuffy gathering.
