It's almost that time of the year again... I'm talking about (the) Eurovision (song Contest)!

The BBC website is up and running. You can watch all the entries, and each country is linked to the BBC News country profile, Wikipedia page, CIA  Wold Factbook and essential phrases.

Culture all around!

There's also a EuroHistory section where you can see all the results year by year, who voted for a particular country and it's all presented in an interactive and fun mode (I know, I am sad!)

I have to set my DVDR to record this year's contest as I will be in the States next weekend.

I hope they change the voting method as each country has the same "weight" in spite of the fact that their population is wildly different. So Andorra has as many votes as the UK! (And Andorra favors the Spanish contestant, especially if they are Catalan.)

And the politics of "bloc" or regional voting is a problem. How many countries are now represented by the old Yugoslavia? And even though they are often enemies, they vote for each other in Eurovision. It is all so predictable…

A comment about that annoying CIA World Factbook. It shows a bit of bias towards Spain like: "Area - comparative: slightly more than twice the size of Oregon". Yeah, compare it to a relatively unimportant state. Actually, Spain's geographical area is closest in size to California, which is a also a Spanish place-name.

Chuck, I like rant at times

I think they have changed it this year, half the points coming from a jury of experts and half from the public vote.

During the G20, the papers here were quite amused by what the CIA World Factbook said about the UK!
