I have lots of catching up to do with my blog, due first to being away for almost a week and then to being very busy with our pre-New Year party once I got back.

I got to Italy a day later than expected due to the fog in the UK but 6 days at my parents' were quite enough!

I managed to see quite a few friends over those 6 days. On the Friday before Christmas I went to Milan to meet Paola (and her husband Francesco). Paola's baby girl is due in early April and she looks radiant.

As they were late, I had some time to play the tourist, and had the time to go up on the cathedral's roof.
I have mixed feelings about Milan (I spent most of 1995 there): it's a busy place with some wonderful monuments but somehow I've never felt it lives up to the hype.

The Duomo (cathedral) is in perennial restoration: every year another part is covered by scaffolding. This year it was the bottom half of the facade while the top half (under restoration last year) was lovely and clean.
As it took about 6 centuries for the cathedral to be finished, Italians use "it's like the Duomo in Milan" to describe something that is never finished. And this applies to the restoration as well!

Here are few pics of the lovely cathedral and some of the galleria with the Christmas tree entirely decorated with Swarowski crystals.
