We went to Greenwich Theatre this evening to see

which was great, mindless fun! We laughed a lot.

We were sitting in the front row and like many others we got picked on: the wedding organiser grabbed our heads together and pushed them to his chest shouting: "Look, I'm Dolly Parton. I've always wanted to do this!"

Before the show, we had dinner in Cafe' Rouge where I got to chat to an Italian couple (he had a very strong Tuscan accent - the hard 'c' is pronounced as an 'h' in English) who were in London for a few days because their daughter wanted to see One Direction at the O2!

And this morning I met my new dentist. The one I had for 13 years left the practice and a new, bright thing took his place. He seems very pleasant and made time to have a chat, and took some general X-rays of my teeth. And, oh yes, he's quite easy on the eye too. But he looked so young - probably not even 30 y.o. - and I felt oh so old!

It's coming up to 7 am and after another restless night (I slept for about 3 hours), I'm not feeling very bright.

I've had toothache since Thursday, first intermittent, then excruciatingly painful and accompanied by earache. On Saturday evening, it abated but my face started to swell.
Hence the nickname the 'squirrel', or should I say the greedy squirrel?

Finally, this morning I can see the dentist (I'm going to the office first and then pop out).
I hate going to the dentist's but on this occasion not so much, although I could berate him for not working Mondays and especially for working on the troublesome tooth last year. He wasn't sure whether it needed root canal treatment or not, and decided it didn't in the end.
Well it was the wrong decision - not only it has cost me and going to cost me pain but also more money.

EDIT: Well according to the dentist, it's a tooth with an old filling. But I'd have put money on the fact that he did it - maybe I'm losing my marbles?
I'm going back for root canal treatment next week and the week after, after the infection has cleared (I was prescribed antibiotics).
The cost is £295 - I had to leave an advance of 100 but I ended up pressing the wrong button before entering the pin, and was about to leave £10,000! Luckily I managed to cancel it!

So...

... what do Marilyn Monroe, Robert Mapplethorpe and [livejournal.com profile] london1967 have in common?
Well (according to Wikipedia for the first two, and to my dentist for the last one) they all suffer(ed) from 'Acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis' aka 'trench mouth'!

It's my second bout in 2 and half years, and it's not fun at all.
I almost begged my GP for antibiotics on Monday but she didn't budge and despite explaining that I had it before, she just said that it was gingivitis and that the cure was a deep cleanse of my gums.
The dentist laughed when I told him that, because he said that I do a pretty good job of keeping my teeth clean; plus having your gums cleaned is the last thing one wants when even flossing is extremely painful.

It's frustrating to be treated as a child by your doctor (although she's not the one I normally see). Next time I'm in Italy, I'll try and buy some antibiotics over the counter to keep in stock, just in case.

I guess I'm also slightly concerned that I had ANUG again. It seems that a weakened immune system is the trigger.
london1967: (9 to 5)
It's not even 5 pm and it's pitch black already, thanks to the clocks going back an hour last week-end.

This evening at 7 pm, there'll be another London Underground strike, the 3rd in 2 months. It wouldn't normally bother me much as I travel by train and bike, but tomorrow I have a dentist's appointment in my lunch break.

The office is in the West End, home in south-east London and dentist in West London. I think I'll be coming to work tomorrow, hoping for the Central line to resume a reduced service mid-morning, like it did last time.
Otherwise I'll have to rely on my legs and a bike for part of the journey. And my lucky star.

At work things have been quieter this week. Last week I would have happily strangled some of my colleagues in the Indian office.
First they ignored the design review they asked me to provide, then the code submitted was full of bugs. A couple of days later they said that they had completed the review actions but, when I checked, 30% hadn't been done.
And of course it all landed on my desk to fix it with only a few hours to go.
Still, our management is very happy because they are cheaper than us.

Talking about work, the Icelander from Sweden who joined a couple of months ago has been quite friendly. Not just with me, of course. Although I am sure that he probably hasn't touched any of my straight colleagues' legs or rubbed their upper arms.
There's nothing sexual, he's really just being friendly (he rubbed my arm when he asked how I felt  - I was sick on Friday) , and probably didn't even notice it. And no, I don't think that I'm flirting with him, even though he's arguably the cutest man in my company (you'll see him at the Christmas party, [livejournal.com profile] london1952 !)
london1967: (pensive)
At first he said that the pain was caused by the cold and the sinuses being full of fluid but when he looked at the x-ray he discovered a very large cavity hidden by the gum.

So another appointment in 2 weeks' time and £120 for the filling; although as he's not sure that the silver based filling will be enough, it may mean a second appointment and another £300!

I'm going to Turin to visit my parents and my brother tomorrow afternoon.
They never ask if there's anything I want for Christmas but if they did, I'd be quite tempted to say dental treatment!

But of course if I said that, my parents would worry about my finances and comment on how much money I 'waste' travelling (Turin doesn't count of course in their books).

Perhaps it'd be easier just to go 'on the game'... not that anyone would pay! LOL!

This afternoon I saw my dentist for the 3rd time in 6 weeks - now with a bit of luck, I won't be back for another 6 months.

I took the afternoon off and was planning to have a walk around Holland Park after my appointment.
Sadly, it started raining as soon as I left the office and had to give the park a miss.

I was disappointed. I haven't been there in years and I had a handful of nuts ready for the squirrels.

I could go one week-end but you cannot beat that feeling of walking around the park during the week, where at the back of your mind there's an irrational touch of guilt.

Oh well, some other time, I guess.

I only worked half day today as I spent half of the afternoon at the dentist's.
Well it wasn't as bad as I anticipated although by the time the dentist and the hygienist had finished, I had a bit of a headache and felt I needed some fresh air.

We live in south-east London but our dentist is in west London (Shepherd's Bush - Adrian used to live there). On way home, I got off at Lancaster Gate and walked through Kensington Gardens to the Albert Memorial.

It was mild and dry, and that stroll made me feel human again.

Ah, it's so lovely to be alive!

In other news, my lovely husband [livejournal.com profile] london1952  has been posting for the last 2 weeks: check him out to hear the other half of the story! LOL!

I went to the dentist's this morning for a check-up

Have I ever mentioned how much I hate sitting on that chair and having my teeth tampered with?
I hate the scraping, the noises and the almost horizontal position (with my mouth full of fluid, I struggle to breathe and constantly worry about choking - the nurses suck at sucking).

As soon as I sit on that chair, my body stiffens and cannot relax no matter how hard I try.

I hate being at the dentist's so much that I could agree to almost anything while I'm there as long as I can get out.
This morning I agreed to another crown, which is going to set me back almost £500.
At least now the torture is delayed by another 3 weeks!

The £500 bill means that we'll have to cut down on the accommodation for our trip to Malta at the end of February; they were a couple of lovely over-the-top apartments in Valletta: I guess we'll have to look at some budget options (sorry [livejournal.com profile] london1952  !)

Have I ever mentioned how much I hate going to the dentist’s, even if just for a check-up?

This time I tried self-hypnosis and managed to soothe my heart palpitations and the feeling sick.

Sadly, it wasn’t all good because there is work to be done and lots of money to be spent. So next time it’s going to be a 2 hour appointment – a few days after coming back from our holiday.
The dentist is apparently so concerned about this tooth with its below-the-gum problem that he’ll try to fit me in before the holiday if he has a cancellation.

In other news, Adrian has received yesterday a letter to inform him that his job is at risk of redundancy. They already had a meeting on Monday so it wasn’t a surprise. The company have decided to close their retail units in the UK and almost certainly Adrian will be without a job from November.
Despite the law, it’s not easy to find a job when you are 55 and it’s such a shame not just because of the money but also because Adrian is really good at interior designing, etc.
All that talent wasted because he’s not a young thing any longer.

In the run up to our trip across the pond, the pound keeps falling further and further against the US$ and it is at an all time low against the Euro. A recession in the UK seems now inevitable.

Perhaps I could always try panhandling in Toronto and in Boston!
