We started our Sunday in a very relaxing way by listening to two Desert Island Discs on-line.

Desert Island Discs started in 1942. Every week one guest (or castaway) is interviewed and chooses 8 pieces of music he/she would like to put on a disc and listen to while stranded on a desert island.
It's quite a lovely programme because not only you listen to a variety of music, but you also discover why it is important to the castaways, and learn more about their lives.

We had missed Armistead Maupin's disc recorded when he was in the UK in 2007, and, at the time, the recording was not available on-line, due to copyright issues.

I don't quite recall what made me look at the BBC's site yesterday but I was delighted to see that now all recordings from 1986 onwards are available! (*) You can even download them for your MP3 player.

We really enjoyed listening to Maupin's selection and hearing him talk about his life.
Then we treated ourselves to the episode featuring the brilliant actress Celia Imrie: I was pleased to see that one of her favourites is one of mine too, which (sorry to be morbid!) I'd like to be played at my funeral (hopefully, many many years from now!).

(*) Sorry but I don't know if they are available from outside the UK.

The DID collection online is terrific. I can thoroughly recommend the Betty Driver programme, which is full of surprises about her interesting life.

I listened to Armistead this afternoon as well as the episode with one of my favorite writers, Bill Bryson.

Thanks for the link. When Myles was alive Desert Island Discs was a Sunday must. After he died I so heavily associated with him and the cats and everything I needed to move on. I have listened to it once in a while and I did download a few in the past but there was never the archive.

Strangely enough, a song Myles wrote (Hole in the Ground) was chosen by Noel Coward as his actual island choice. Myles, in thrall, had listened to the programme, was beside himself...but never wrote to Coward. Too daunting.
So I immediately looked for that. Unfortunately, one they don't have a recording of.

But I am now going to sit here with a cup of tea and go through the entire list.

Wow, he must have been very proud of that!

I plan to listen to quite a few recordings myself.

What a great recommendation. Thanks.

I loved the Maupin programme. And then I had to download the songs I didn't already have (4 of 8) to maeka complete iTunes plays list for Armistead Maupin's Desert Island.

I can't believe I didn't already have teh Victor Victoria soundtrack. Actually I think I did have a copy of it, but I don't now. Well NOW I do because I bought the entire albume not just the You And Me track.

An interesting premise for a radio program. Maybe we'll get a Canadian version one day soon....
