Oh well, the Italians have voted and chosen Berlusconi as their prime minister, once again.

This is the nail in the coffin of gay marriages.
Berlusconi's manifesto stresses the importance of the traditional "natural" family "based on the union of a man and a woman", and denounces the policies of "the Left" because  they "destroy the family" and "do not respect the moral values of the Italian people".
*sigh*

As the BBC and all the British media like to repeat ad nauseam, this will be the 62nd government in the 63 years of the Italian Republic. Maybe then there's still hope.

A text message from my friend from Genova last night "We got Berlusconi back...... FUCK!!!"

No extra comment needed.

What has Italy done to deserve that?

I'm sure he didn't... lots of Italians genuinely like him!

Rigged election to support B??

Italians sure love to have elections. I must not be paying attention - they seem to have them every six months.

No, I'm sure that it wasn't rigged (it is not Zimbabwe! LOL!). It's just that lots of people like him. *sigh*

Since 1948 there have only been 16 general elections (the same number of American presidential elections!). It's the governments that change more often, because of shifts in the party coalitions.

Berlusconi's win

I was a little surprised by Berlusconi's margin of victory. How different Spain is where even the King talks about it being "open" and "diverse".

I was as well, I was expecting a much closer race.

Spain is an amazing country: it has moved forward so much in a relatively short period of time.

When the BBC harps on about different Italians governments it also seems to forget that Democrazia Cristiana was the main party in all governments from 1948 to 1992.

I am just amazed that Berlusconi's has been returned to government but I guess the Italian electorate like his "populist" style. I sometimes wonder if where Italy went wrong after WWII was when the 1946 Referendum created the Republic of Italy. Would Italian politics have been more stable under a constitutional monarchy? It is an exageration but I do think that the constitutional monarchies in Europe (with maybe the exception of Belgium) tend to be a bit more liberal.

That's a very interesting idea!
The grandson of the last king of Italy was running but he didn't get elected.

I just hope that after the disappointment of Berlusconi, I won't have another one in May with Boris. I couldn't bear it!

The headline here was that Maggie Thatcher is his vorbild ...er, guess that's role model.

I thought, yikes. That's bad news. (Course I don't know your opinion on Thatcher).
